Fort Dick, CA

Fort Dick is a Del Norte County CDP of 912 residents in the 2020 census, about five miles north of Crescent City and roughly 15 miles south of the Oregon line. U.S. 101 is the spine, with Elk Valley Road, Lake Earl, and the Smith River country shaping the nearby map. The community's name comes with an early overland story too: a party traveling with Jedediah Smith passed along the eastern edge of Lake Earl in 1828, and the post office arrived in 1917. The local landscape is organized by water and redwoods.

Lake Earl Wildlife Area covers two connected coastal lagoons, Lake Earl and Lake Tolowa, with marshes and a channel called the Narrows; Redwood National and State Parks stretch along the coast and inland toward the Smith River. Fort Dick's elementary school sits inside a countywide school system, while older students connect to Crescent City-area schools. The practical rhythm is regional: school and home close to the highway, Crescent City for larger needs, and the lagoons, river, and redwood country immediately beyond.
