Fort Fairfield, ME

Fort Fairfield sits on the Aroostook River along Maine’s border with Canada, a town whose name comes from Governor John Fairfield and whose local history still has a blockhouse in the middle of it. The Blockhouse Museum is a 1976 replica of the original fortification from the Aroostook War of 1839, when the structure helped prevent lumber from moving into Canada. Every July, the Maine Potato Blossom Festival turns the surrounding fields into the town’s big annual stage, with a parade, potato wrestling, and fireworks.
