Fort Mohave, AZ

Located just south of Bullhead City along Arizona Route 95, Fort Mohave offers a relaxed desert setting close to the Colorado River. Quiet subdivisions, golf communities, and open desert roads branch east toward the Black Mountains, while daily necessities line the highway. Supermarkets, hardware stores, and local dining spots cluster along this main corridor alongside the South Mohave Valley Community Library. Healthcare is readily available too, thanks to Valley View Medical Center, a full-service hospital right on Route 95 that serves patients from across the river valley.

The community takes its name from the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe, known as the Aha Macav, or "people along the water." For centuries, the river sustained tribal life through farming, fishing, and trade across both riverbanks. In the 1850s, the U.S. Army established an outpost near an important river crossing, and that military post later served as a boarding school before the creation of the Fort Mojave Reservation, which today spans parts of Arizona, California, and Nevada. Modern Fort Mohave borders these historic lands, retaining a strong connection to the region's heritage.

Running errands is straightforward since most stores, clinics, and county services are right on the highway. When you want more variety, Bullhead City is just up the road, the riverfront casinos and live shows of Laughlin are minutes away across the Nevada border, and Needles, California, is an easy drive south. With sunny winters, nearby boating and off-road trails, and relatively affordable homes, it is an appealing option for retirees, snowbirds, and families alike.
