Fort Plain, NY

Fort Plain is a Montgomery County village on the south bank of the Mohawk River, where Otsquago Creek comes down to the river and the Erie Canal corridor runs beside town. It sits in the town of Minden, with Nelliston across the water and Canajoharie a few miles east at the Thruway. Route 5S, the Mohawk, and the creek give you the basic layout.

The name comes from the Revolutionary War fort on the hill above the village. The site had an earlier fort from the French and Indian War period, then became a Mohawk Valley defense post; in 1780 General Robert Van Rensselaer used Fort Plain as a headquarters. After the fighting, the village shifted toward the river and canal economy, becoming a market and trading point. Today, Fort Plain’s historic district, post office, conservation area, and village offices sit in a place where the old military high ground and the working river valley are still close together.
