Fort Towson, OK

Fort Towson is a Choctaw County town eleven miles east of Hugo, with its name tied directly to the historic military site nearby. The fort was established in May 1824 and named for General Nathan Towson, a War of 1812 officer. Doaksville grew about a mile west as a trading center and later served as a capital of the Choctaw Nation. The Red River landing near the fort connected the area to steamboat traffic, giving this rural corner a surprisingly broad regional reach.

The present town took shape in 1902 after the Arkansas and Choctaw Railway reached eastern Choctaw County. Fort Towson Historic Site now preserves the layered story through a visitor center, reconstructed sutler store, teamster’s cabin, walking trails, and the ruins of the old post. The steamboat Heroine, which sank in 1838 while carrying people and supplies toward the fort, adds a river chapter to the site’s history. Raymond Gary Lake lies about a mile east of town, giving Fort Towson another landmark beyond the fort grounds.
