Fort White, FL

Fort White is a Columbia County town named for a military fort built in 1836 during the Second Seminole War. The fort protected the Cow Creek settlement, and supplies moved by steamboat along the Santa Fe River to other area forts. State Road 47 runs through town, about 20 miles south of Lake City and 23 miles north of Trenton. The 2020 census counted 618 residents. Fort White also sits just four miles from the clear Ichetucknee River and springs, which have made the town a natural base for visitors heading toward Ichetucknee Springs State Park.

The town’s built history includes the Fort White Public School Historic District and Fort White High School. The original high school building dates to 1915, with an auditorium added in 1936, and Columbia County schools continue to serve local families. The state acquired the Ichetucknee Springs property in 1970 to preserve the spring and river landscape, giving Fort White a nearby public destination without turning the town itself into a resort strip. Today the school, the old fort story, State Road 47, and the spring-fed river organize Fort White’s daily geography.
