Fort Yukon, AK

Fort Yukon sits right along the Arctic Circle where the Yukon and Porcupine rivers meet in northeastern Alaska. Home to around 400 residents, this predominantly Gwich’in Athabascan community is entirely off the road system, located about 145 air miles from Fairbanks. Daily travel and supply runs rely on small planes and riverboats, making aviation the primary connection to the outside world. Relocating here means preparing for extreme weather, with long, sub-zero winters that give way to warm, sun-filled summers under the midnight sun.

First established as a trading post in the mid-1800s, Fort Yukon now functions as the service hub for the broader Yukon Flats region. The town offers basic infrastructure for residents and newcomers, including a K-12 school, a health clinic, tribal community programs, and local courses through the University of Alaska.
