Fowlkes, TN

Fowlkes is an unincorporated community in Dyer County, Tennessee, formed around Fowlkes Station when the railroad reached the county in the early 1880s. By 1887, the settlement had a school, a Methodist church, grist mills, and cotton gins. Those institutions matched the surrounding farm country: the Newport News and Mississippi Valley Railroad gave local cotton and agricultural goods a route to larger markets, while the station gave the place its name and its reason for being. The 2020 census counted 882 residents in the Fowlkes census-designated place.

The railroad remains the clearest line in Fowlkes's story, even as present-day routines center on county roads, schools, and nearby Dyer County towns. Fowlkes belongs to the Dyer County School District, and older students are zoned for Dyer County High School in Newbern. That arrangement places education outside the settlement's own small footprint while keeping it tied to the county's wider network. Fowlkes is still best understood as a station community set in productive West Tennessee farmland, with its church, school history, and rail corridor marking the layers that gathered around the tracks.
