Franconia's newest civic address puts a regional library, police station, district supervisor's office, museum, active-adult center, and child-care center in one roughly 90,000-square-foot building. The Franconia Governmental Center opened on Silver Lake Boulevard on April 11, 2026. Its 30,000-square-foot Kingstowne Regional Library opened with more than 55,000 items, public computers and Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, and four study rooms; the Franconia Museum sits off the lobby. The arrangement fits a place whose named neighborhoods and Alexandria mailing addresses overlap: Franconia includes communities such as Manchester Lakes and Windsor Estates. Franconia had 18,943 residents in 2020. The community name dates to an RF&P Railroad station opened in the 1870s, while most of the present suburban pattern arrived after the 1950s. Older Franconia Road began as a rolling road used to haul tobacco toward Alexandria.

The nearby Franconia-Springfield station combines Metrorail's Blue Line with Virginia Railway Express service on the Fredericksburg Line. WMATA lists 5,069 all-day parking spaces, 30 bicycle racks, and eight lockers. On Telegraph Road, Franconia Rec Center provides an indoor pool, fitness facilities, courts, a track, classes, camps, and monthly themed skate-and-dance nights. The adjoining recreation area is unusually thorough in its accessible design. Our Special Harbor is a free Chesapeake Bay-themed spray park with reduced-sensory sessions during summer 2026; the 2,160-foot Chessie's Trail adds a sound garden, boardwalk, tactile features, and rest areas. Chessie's Big Backyard has a rubber surface, wide ramps, and play equipment designed for children using wheelchairs, while an accessible treehouse and carousel extend the same approach beyond the playground.
