Franklin, AL

Franklin is a rural Macon County town in northwest Alabama, set between Auburn and Montgomery along Interstate 85. The 2020 census counted 590 residents. I-85 runs along the lower part of town, with State Route 49 and County Road 17 providing the local roads around it. The town’s religious history is unusually deep: Franklin has had churches for over two centuries, with early Methodist mission work connected to the Creek community.

Today the town’s practical center is Town Hall, where residents find meeting notices, permits, water-system information, and town services. Franklin also has its own police and fire departments, with emergency dispatch handled through the Macon County Sheriff’s Office. Town Hall’s message board and water-system notices make that corridor feel lived in, not merely passed through. Church steeples punctuate the rural view each day. The result is a small town with a rural setting and a compact municipal map—churches, town government, utilities, and emergency services all fitted around the highway corridor.
