Franklin, GA

Franklin is the Heard County seat, set on a bluff above the Chattahoochee River in west-central Georgia. The community began as a village around 1770 and became the county seat on December 26, 1831. U.S. 27 skirts the east side of town, while Georgia 34 and Georgia 100 tie the center to Newnan, Hogansville, and the Alabama line. The 2020 Census counted 950 residents, so Franklin's reach into the surrounding countryside is bigger than its headcount.

The best doorway into local history is the Heard County Old Jail, built in 1912. It held the county jail and sheriff's residence until 1964 and now houses the historical center, museum, archives, and genealogy research. The river is the other defining line, shaping the county and Franklin's bluff-top setting. The community calendar keeps that connection close with a Chattahoochee Independence Day and A Taste of a Chattahoochee Christmas, while the Powers' Crossroads Country Fair brings a larger crowd to the nearby county line. Franklin feels like a working courthouse town with a river view and a long memory.
