Frederic, WI

Frederic is a Polk County village on State Highway 35, with Highway 48 and the roads toward Burnett County feeding into town. It started as a logging community in 1903, then spent the next several decades becoming a retail and service stop for northern Polk County and southern Burnett County. You can still see those layers in a few blocks: the Soo Line depot, now the Frederic Area Museum, recalls the rail years, while Coon Lake and Coon Lake Park give the center a bit of water and open space. The village has more than 40 acres of parkland and a 20-acre lake with docks, ball fields, a bandstand, and winter skating and ski routes.

Frederic’s daily life is built around those practical pieces. Frederic Elementary and Frederic 6–12 keep the school system in town, and the former theater now holds the public library. Add the arts groups, historical society, and highway traffic, and the place makes sense: a northwestern Wisconsin service village with a logging past, a lake in the middle, and enough civic life to keep the old main street from feeling like a museum set.
