Free Union, VA

Free Union is an Albemarle County hamlet ten miles northwest of Charlottesville, between the Moormans River and Buck Mountain. It is small even by rural crossroads standards: the 2020 count was 187, and the place is a handful of homes, a post office, a doctor's office, a private school, and the businesses that keep a spread-out community moving. The landscape is older than that list. Settlement began in the mid-1700s, and this part of Albemarle became part of the county in 1761.

Free Union started life as Nicksville, named for a free Blacksmith named Nick, before the post office adopted Free Union in 1847. The name fits the 1837 brick union church, which brought Baptist, Methodist, Episcopalian, and Presbyterian congregations together under one roof; after the Civil War, James Ferguson taught Black students there. Today the church, river roads, and the little set of everyday services give the hamlet its shape. Free Union feels rural, but it is not anonymous country: it has a place name with a backstory, a shared church, and a crossroads where neighbors still find the basics.
