About Freeman

Freeman is a Hutchinson County city laid out in 1879, with a school story that reaches back to German Mennonite and Anabaptist settlers. South Dakota Mennonite College opened classes in 1903; it later became Freeman Junior College and Academy, and the academy tradition continues through Freeman Academy. The local public schools are Freeman High School and Freeman Elementary, whose teams are the Flyers. That gives the city a distinct local shorthand: Mennonite education, junior college, Flyers, and a southeast South Dakota town built around a long school chapter.
