About Fremont
Fremont is a Mahaska County city where the 2020 census counted 708 residents. In 1871, the town stretched eight blocks along Main Street, with a Baptist church, hotel, three stores, a barber shop, and a school already in place. That early list gives Fremont its basic shape: a small service town organized along a main street and surrounded by the agricultural country of southern Iowa.
Today Fremont belongs to the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Community School District, formed in 2012 when the Fremont district joined the Eddyville-Blakesburg system. The merger widened the school network, while Fremont kept its own city streets and local institutions. Mahaska County roads connect the town with Oskaloosa, Eddyville, and nearby farms. The old Main Street pattern still carries the story: a church, a few shops, a school, and a hotel grew into a town whose daily life continues to move through the same county crossroads. The town still fits that original pattern of Main Street commerce and school connections.
