French Camp, MS

French Camp is a Choctaw County town on the Natchez Trace, a place whose name comes from Louis LeFleur’s early trading stand and inn. Around 1812, LeFleur established the stand beside the Trace after trading with Choctaw communities, and travelers began calling the site the Frenchman’s Camp. The parkway still crosses Mississippi Highway 413 just west of town, so the old travel corridor remains part of the everyday map.

French Camp Academy and French Camp Elementary School give the town a strong educational center, while the Natchez Trace Historic Village keeps the older stand-era setting visible. The Trace is still the road that gives French Camp its shape. Rainwater Observatory and Planetarium adds a different kind of landmark: founded in 1985 on the academy’s farm, it grew into Mississippi’s largest observatory, with telescopes and programs for schools and visitors. French Camp brings several timelines into one small place—Choctaw and French connections, Natchez Trace travel, Christian boarding-school life, and a dark-sky hill outside town.
