Fridley, MN

Fridley has always been tied to the waterways and routes running through it. The Mississippi River hugs the western border, joined by Rice Creek, along what used to be a historic ox-cart trading trail connecting St. Paul to the Red River Valley. The area grew quickly as a suburb after World War II. A major river flood and a destructive wave of tornadoes swept through in 1965, damaging roughly a quarter of the homes in town. That sudden rebuild shaped much of the city's character today, leaving behind established neighborhoods filled with classic mid-century ramblers and split-levels.

Outside of Springbrook, the city maintains dozens of neighborhood parks and paved trail connections along the river and Rice Creek. The updated Commons Park has also become a major hub for recreation, offering pickleball courts, a splash pad, modern play areas, and sports fields.

Popular traditions include outdoor summer concerts, the annual 49er Days festival, winter gatherings at Springbrook, and October's Pumpkin Night, when hundreds of carved jack-o'-lanterns illuminate the nature trails. With around 31,000 residents, Fridley offers an approachable entry point into the close-in suburbs, featuring relatively affordable home prices and average commute times right around twenty minutes. It is a solid, unpretentious option for anyone looking for convenience and a quick commute.
