Friendship, TN

Friendship is a Crockett County city whose name grew out of a practical compromise. When a post office was planned in 1844, two storekeepers moved their businesses to a midpoint between their original locations, creating the downtown that gave the town its name. Friendship was laid out in the 1850s, and churches, schools, and a railroad depot later filled in the map. Main Street remains the place to start: city offices occupy 631 Main Street, close to the older churches and the central street grid.

Current routines are easy to locate. City Hall handles meetings and utilities including garbage, gas, sewer, and water; Friendship Volunteer Fire Department works from 105 Church Street; and Friendship Elementary sits at 6117 Highway 189 for prekindergarten through fifth grade. State Route 189 links Friendship to Maury City and the surrounding Crockett County roads. The old story about two stores meeting in the middle still describes the town's physical layout: civic offices, churches, school traffic, and fire calls all radiate from a small central grid.
