Fruitland, NC

At the 2020 census, Fruitland was a Henderson County census-designated place of 2,257 people in the foothills near Hendersonville. Its name comes from the orchards and fruit fields that shaped the community, especially apples, peaches, and vineyards. For much of its early history Fruitland was treated as part of Edneyville and, in some sections, Clear Creek; the place grew as an agricultural area without a compact main street at its center. Green Mountain Academy opened in 1898 at Fruitland Road and South Mills Gap Road, adding a school chapter to the orchard country.

Fruitland still has that farm-and-foothill mix. Vegetable fields, orchards, nurseries, greenhouses, and a vineyard share the landscape, while the old Pittillo dairy story survives through the family's later work with turf and plant growing. Hendersonville is close enough to draw people into town, but Fruitland's roads lead through a broader agricultural belt where the scenery changes from houses to orchards quickly. The place is easy to mistake for a generic name on a map; locally, it is the Henderson County community where fruit growing became the organizing fact.
