Fullerton, CA

If you love music, Fullerton has one of the coolest origin stories in Southern California. This is the birthplace of the modern electric guitar. Back in the late 1940s and 50s, local radio repairman Leo Fender developed the Telecaster and the Stratocaster right here, fundamentally shaping the sound of rock, country, and blues. His original workshop stood along Harbor Boulevard, and G&L Musical Instruments still crafts guitars in town today. You can stop by the Fullerton Museum Center to check out early Fender prototypes and patent sketches, giving downtown a fun, creative pedigree you can feel while walking to dinner or grabbing coffee.

Downtown Fullerton grew up around the Santa Fe railroad depot in the late 1800s, giving it a walkable street grid that stands out from the master-planned suburbs typical of Orange County. The intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Commonwealth Avenue anchors the historic center, filled with preserved brick storefronts, indie coffee spots, vintage boutiques, and shaded patio dining. It is one of the few places in north Orange County where you can park once and comfortably spend an entire afternoon on foot, whether you are running a quick errand or meeting friends for drinks.

The city also draws plenty of everyday energy from its two higher-ed campuses. Fullerton College, the oldest continuously operating community college in California, sits right on the northern edge of downtown. A bit further east, Cal State Fullerton brings over 40,000 university students and faculty into the community. Having both schools nearby supports a lively food scene along Chapman Avenue, plenty of arts and athletic events, and convenient transit. Commuters regularly use the historic Fullerton Transportation Center, where Metrolink and Amtrak trains offer an easy ride into downtown Los Angeles or south toward San Diego without dealing with freeway traffic.

That mix of students, residents, and commuters keeps the neighborhood active well into the evening. Downtown Plaza serves as a central gathering spot, hosting a popular Thursday night market from spring through late summer complete with food vendors, local artisans, and live bands. Between the reliable rail access, community events, and a great balance of quiet residential neighborhoods and bustling local businesses, Fullerton offers an inviting, down-to-earth character that makes newcomers feel settled right away.
