About Funkstown

Funkstown began in 1767, when Jacob Funck laid out a village called Jerusalem in a horseshoe bend of Antietam Creek. The town's name changed with its founder's family, but the creek still gives the place its shape. Baltimore Street follows the old National Road through the historic center, where log, stone, and brick buildings preserve the town's late-18th- through mid-20th-century layers. Funkstown sits just south of Hagerstown, close to the wider Washington County road network. The town keeps that history in the present calendar. Day in the Park and the Battle of Funkstown take place each July, while Olde Tyme Christmas returns in December. Local businesses cluster around the Historic Town Center. Funkstown is small, but its map is unusually clear: Antietam Creek, Baltimore Street, Jacob Funck's original plan, and a downtown that still carries the founder's name.
