About Funny River

Funny River is a Kenai Peninsula Borough census-designated place named for the nearby stream that first appeared on a U.S. Geological Survey map in 1904. Homesteading and farming expanded here in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and Funny River Road began as a bulldozed trail connecting the homesteads to Soldotna. The community lies between the Funny River and Kenai River, with Browns Lake farther east and no bridge across the Kenai to Sterling. Alaska State Parks’ Funny River Campground sits at the confluence of the two rivers, with fishing access and ten campsites. The 2014 Funny River Fire burned roughly 200,000 acres and threatened the community, giving the place a recent history written in both river access and wildfire.
