Gahanna, OH

Three waterways shape both Gahanna's name and many of its most recognizable public spaces. City history traces the name to a Native American word for three creeks joining as one, an idea repeated in the "Three In One" inscription on the city seal. John Clark founded Gahanna along Big Walnut Creek in 1849 on land his family had acquired decades earlier. Bridgeport arose across Granville Street in 1853; the rival settlements eventually merged under the Gahanna name, and the village incorporated in 1881. By the 2020 census, this northeastern Franklin County city had 35,726 residents. The creek confluence is therefore not simply an origin story but an organizing feature that still links downtown, parks, and trails. Gahanna maintains 759 acres across 52 parks and green spaces, including more than 200 acres of conservation land, two aquatic facilities, a nine-hole golf course, and a dog park.

About 20 miles of trails run through the system. The 4.6-mile Big Walnut Trail connects Academy Park, Woodside Green Park, the municipal golf course, Creekside Park and Plaza, Veterans Memorial Park, and the city pool, making several recreation sites reachable along one continuous route. Creekside Plaza places restaurants and a public stage beside the park and arboretum. Its 2026 calendar included a summer market, free Creekside Live concerts, and the three-day Creekside Blues and Jazz Festival. For a quieter outing, Gahanna Woods and State Nature Preserve covers more than 99 acres of meadow, wetland, seasonal streams, dirt paths, and boardwalks into woodland swamps. The city's herb identity also remains active rather than ceremonial: Herb Day at Creekside Plaza brought a plant sale, herb activities, artists, and herb-based vendors together in May 2026 to mark Gahanna's Herb Capital status.
