Gainesboro, TN

Gainesboro is Jackson County’s seat in the Upper Cumberland, a town shaped by salt licks, frontier roads, and the Cumberland River. Long hunters were drawn to the area in the 1770s by natural salt licks; in the 1790s Avery’s Trace passed nearby, with travelers using Fort Blount about ten miles west. The county formed in 1801, and Gainesboro became the place where county business collected. You can still feel the river in the town’s layout.

Water still matters. The Cumberland River runs through the wider Jackson County map, and a deepwater port opened near Gainesboro in 1981 after Cordell Hull Dam flooded the river in 1963. The town’s museum preserves artifacts from county history, while the local roads connect it to Cookeville and the rest of the Upper Cumberland. Gainesboro’s local scoop is a courthouse town with an older frontier trail under it: salt licks brought the first hunters, the river kept the corridor alive, and the county seat remains the steady point on the map.
