About Galesburg
Galesburg sits on the north side of the Kalamazoo River, roughly between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. It began in 1835 as Morton, was replatted as Galesburg in 1837, became a village in 1861, and finally a city in 1931. The river is the through-line: it gives the city its geography, while the old naming and incorporation dates show a place growing from settlement to municipality in stages. Galesburg is a small Michigan city whose location beside the Kalamazoo still does the simplest work of telling you where it is.
