Galisteo, NM

Galisteo is a Santa Fe County census-designated place in the Galisteo Basin, set along Galisteo Creek a short drive south of Santa Fe. The 2020 census counted 253 residents. The name reaches back to Galisteo Pueblo, one of the Tano villages in the basin, while the present village grew from a Spanish settlement established around 1814. Adobe homes, old field patterns, and the creek keep that long history close to the road.

The village sits on an old route through central New Mexico, with the Ortiz Mountains forming the western skyline and high-desert mesas running out in every direction. Galisteo has a rodeo, an annual studio tour, and a former nineteenth-century adobe dance hall now used as an art gallery, so the place has a strong creative streak alongside its ranch-and-acequia past. Santa Fe is near enough to shape the wider orbit, but Galisteo still feels like its own basin community. The road comes in, the creek cuts through, and the old adobe landscape does the rest.
