Gallant, AL

Gallant is an unincorporated community spanning Etowah and St. Clair counties west of Gadsden. The place is also known as Clear Springs or Greasy Cove, and its name honors a pioneer settler who came from Tennessee. A post office using ZIP 35972 serves the community. The 2020 census counted 869 residents. Gallant’s location puts it close to Gadsden’s county-seat services while leaving the settlement spread through the wooded foothills between two counties.

Camp Sumatanga gives Gallant its strongest local landmark. The 1,700-acre Methodist camp and conference center includes woods, mountains, lakes, streams, retreats, and summer programs, so the community’s map includes a large institutional landscape alongside homes and roads. Its grounds host retreats, church gatherings, and summer camps for children and youth. The camp provides meeting space, lodging, and worship areas.
