About Galt

Every Tuesday and Wednesday, the city-operated Galt Market turns the former Sacramento County fairgrounds into a year-round open-air shopping site. It runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine and except Christmas Day, with produce, clothing, tools, household goods, and other merchandise sold by hundreds of vendors. The market is a practical continuation of Galt's agricultural history rather than a one-off festival. The Central Pacific Railroad Company laid out the town in 1869, and local rancher John McFarland requested the name in honor of his Canadian hometown. Galt lies in southern Sacramento County on Highway 99 between Stockton and Sacramento; 25,383 people lived in the city at the 2020 census. City recreation is distributed among neighborhood parks, Gora Aquatic Center, Chabolla Skate Park, a sports complex, and rentable picnic pavilions.

The Galt Herald

The Galt-Marian O. Lawrence Library adds free Wi-Fi, public computers, scanning, tablets, and Spanish-language materials; its current building opened in 1993 and honors a teacher, former mayor, and longtime library supporter. Nature programming reaches beyond city facilities. The 19th Galt Winter Bird Festival in 2026 paired workshops and guided outings with a senior wetlands tour at Cosumnes River Preserve. The preserve's visitor center is in Galt, beside one of California's last remaining undammed rivers. More than four miles of trails cross wetlands, riparian forest, and grassland, including a one-mile universally accessible Wetlands Walk and an accessible boardwalk. With more than 250 bird species documented there, the preserve gives the festival a local ecological subject rather than a generic seasonal theme.
