About Gambell
Gambell is a small city on the northwest cape of St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, far southwest of Nome. The Yupik name Sivuqaq refers to both the island and Gambell, and the community remains closely tied to Siberian Yupik culture, subsistence, and sea travel. It had 640 residents at the 2020 census and is served by the Bering Strait School District. Gambell is remote even by Alaska standards, sitting close to Russia in geography, history, and cultural connection.
