Garden City stretches in a narrow six-mile ribbon along the Boise River, bordered almost entirely by Boise with Eagle touching its western edge. Chinden Boulevard runs right through the center of this compact four-square-mile town. Its name pays tribute to the Chinese immigrants who farmed the rich river bottomland in the late nineteenth century and supplied fresh produce to the region. The city took another big turn in 1949 when local business owners incorporated the area to keep card rooms open after Boise banned gambling.
