About Gardner

Gardner is a Grundy County village that grew out of the Chicago & Alton Railroad line laid through the area in 1854. The town was named for Henry A. Gardner, the railroad’s chief engineer and an early surveyor of the site; Gardner incorporated in 1867 and later became part of the historic Route 66 corridor. Gardner Community Consolidated School District 72C and Gardner-South Wilmington Township High School District keep the school map local. Gardner is an Illinois railroad village with coal-era roots and a small-town grid built around the tracks.
