About Garfield

Garfield is a Travis County CDP southeast of Austin with a history that started as a small 1880s crossroads and later got pulled into the Austin area's growth. By 1884, the settlement had a church, school, steam gristmill, cotton gin, and general store; the post office opened in 1881, likely giving the place its James A. Garfield name. Garfield's schools later joined the Del Valle district, and in 1985 residents voted to incorporate the community to avoid annexation by Austin. Today the map label is bigger than the old crossroads, but the original pieces still tell the story: mill, gin, church, school, and a neighborhood keeping its own line.
