Garnavillo, IA

Garnavillo is a Clayton County city with 763 people in 2020, set on the St. Peter formation in northeast Iowa. Its place in county history is bigger than its size: Garnavillo once served as the county seat, and the town's ground has long mattered to the local economy. Pattison Sand has worked a St. Peter Sandstone mine here since 1983. The operation reopened in 2007 with production centered on limestone aggregates, silica proppants, and frac sand, linking a small community to a specialized regional materials business. The mine gives Garnavillo an industrial role alongside its civic history.

School life now runs through Clayton Ridge Community School District, created in 2005 when the Guttenberg and Garnavillo districts merged. That arrangement places Garnavillo in a shared school network with its neighboring communities while preserving local ties to the town. With its county-seat past, working mine, and layered stone beneath its streets, Garnavillo is a place where civic history and geology are both visible in everyday life.
