About Gassville

Gassville’s name is the first thing you notice, and the answer is pure local nickname territory. The Baxter County city dates to the 1840s and was incorporated in 1903; it took the name Gassville from postmaster P.A. Cox, who was known as a talker or “gasser.” Before that, the place had been called Mount Pleasant and Turkey’s Neck. Today Gassville sits between Mountain Home and Harrison, close to the White River and along U.S. 412/62. Most students are in the Cotter School District, with a small section in Mountain Home. It is a river-country town whose odd name has become its best calling card.
