Gate City, VA

Gate City is Scott County’s seat in far Southwest Virginia, set near Big Moccasin Gap and the North Fork of the Holston River. The 2020 census counted 2,043 residents. U.S. Routes 23 and 421 run close by, which is why the town became a commercial stop for farmers, travelers, and county business. Gate City first went by Estillville; the name changed in 1890, when its position at the mountain gap had already made it a natural meeting point.

The town still has that crossroads feel, with the courthouse, local schools, and older buildings gathered against the mountain backdrop. Shoemaker Elementary and Gate City Middle keep the school story local, while the historic district carries the older commercial town forward. A little movie lore is mixed in too: scenes from The River were shot here. Gate City is the sort of county seat that makes sense once you see the gap, a town placed where people and goods had to pass on their way through the valley. The town’s scale is modest, but the county-seat job gives it a daily reason to stay busy: court business, school runs, and errands from the surrounding hollows all converge here.
