Gates, OR

Set right along the North Santiam River in the Santiam Canyon, Gates is a small town of roughly 550 residents straddling the Marion and Linn county line. Highway 22 runs straight through town, making it easy to head about 30 miles west into Salem for work and major shopping runs, or 20 minutes east to Detroit Lake for boating and camping. It has a quiet, rural feel tucked into the foothills, while keeping daily travel throughout the canyon straightforward.

Outdoor recreation is a big draw for locals, with easy access to river fishing, spots like Rock Creek Campground, and miles of surrounding forest trails. Gates shares its school district with neighboring canyon towns, meaning younger kids attend elementary school locally and head a few miles down the road to Mill City for middle and high school. It is a relaxed, neighborly community where you get fresh air, mountain scenery, and a true small-town pace.
