About Gates
Gates sits in the Santiam Canyon on the North Santiam River, with city streets crossing the Linn-Marion county line. The 2020 census counted 548 residents. Salem is about 32 miles west, Detroit Lake about 20 minutes east, and the highway through town follows the river into the canyon. Gates grew through that corridor: early schools and post offices served both sides of the river, the Gates family platted the town in 1888, the Oregon Pacific Railroad arrived in 1891, and the community became a timber-service center before incorporation in 1950.
The river and canyon still set the daily map. Santiam Horse Camp, Rock Creek Campground, and Elkhorn Golf Course sit among the nearby places residents use for recreation, while the city's gazebo provides a small civic marker in town. Gates is part of the Santiam Canyon School District; students attend elementary schools in the canyon and middle and high school in Mill City. It is a small place where the school route, river road, forest access, and town center all run together.
