Gause, TX

Gause is a Milam County census-designated place along the U.S. Highway 79 and 190 corridor, where the 2020 census counted 275 residents. The community is named for William J. Gause, who moved to the area in 1872 and built a home from lumber hauled in from Montgomery. Gause sits sixteen miles southeast of Cameron and twenty-nine miles west of Bryan, with Sugarloaf Mountain nearby as the highest point in Milam County.

Gause Independent School District was established in 1905 and was the first independent district in Milam County. Its single campus serves students from prekindergarten through eighth grade, keeping the school close to the center of community life. The highway gives Gause a north-south route across the county, while Sugarloaf adds a strong landmark to the surrounding farm country. Gause is a small Texas place with a settler's name, a long highway connection, a one-campus school system, and a notable hill nearby. The hill is visible in the broader Milam County view.
