About Geneva

Geneva's downtown links three systems that still shape daily routines: Kane County government, the Fox River corridor, and commuter rail to Chicago. The settlement became the county seat when Kane County formed in 1836, and permanent rail service reached it in 1853. Metra's May 2026 Union Pacific West schedule continues that connection from the downtown Geneva station to Ogilvie Transportation Center. The Fox River Trail passes through Island Park and continues north and south along the valley. Geneva had 21,393 residents in the 2020 census; the July 2025 estimate was 21,138. For 2020 through 2024, 85 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied value was $441,400, monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $2,756, and median gross rent was $1,768. community activity extends from the river into several distinct park and event settings. The Geneva Park District operates more than 50 parks; Island Park puts gardens, a playground, and trail access within walking distance of downtown, while 385-acre Peck Farm Park combines prairie and wetland trails with a nature center, observation silo, seasonal butterfly house, and nature playground.

South of downtown, county-run Fabyan Forest Preserve spans both riverbanks and preserves the Fabyan Villa Museum, Japanese Garden, and restored five-story Dutch windmill. The ownership distinction matters because the forest preserve, park district, and city maintain different facilities and schedules. Swedish Days has brought a parade, carnival, music, children's programming, and merchant events downtown since 1949; the 2026 festival was its 76th edition. Professional baseball provides another recurring gathering point: the Kane County Cougars play at Northwestern Medicine Field in Geneva as members of the American Association. These institutions put river recreation, rail access, downtown events, and professional sports in separate but connected parts of the city.
