Genoa, NE

Genoa is a Nance County city with 894 residents in the 2020 census, known for a history that moves through Mormon settlement, Pawnee land dispossession, a federal boarding school, and regional public education. Mormon colonists founded the community in 1857, but they left in 1859 when the settlement and surrounding land were folded into the newly created Pawnee Reservation. The episode sits at the beginning of a much larger and more difficult local story.

In 1884, the Genoa Indian Industrial School opened on the former reservation, becoming one of the federal government's major off-reservation boarding schools for Native children. It operated until 1934; the campus once covered hundreds of acres and included dozens of buildings, while the remaining brick school building now houses a museum. The school pursued forced assimilation, making its history inseparable from the loss of language, family ties, and cultural practices. Genoa's present school system is Twin River Public Schools, formed in 2001 by combining Genoa, Monroe, and Silver Creek districts. The city is both a working school center and a place where Nebraska's settlement and boarding-school histories remain close together.
