Gerton, NC

Tucked into the scenic Upper Hickory Nut Gorge, Gerton is a peaceful mountain community of around three hundred residents in western North Carolina. Set along Route 74A between Asheville and Hendersonville, the settlement sits in a lush valley framed by forested ridges and quiet mountain streams. With Bearwallow Mountain rising nearby, it offers cool breezes, scenic hiking trails, and a relaxed pace of life within an easy drive of city conveniences.

The area also has plenty of local charm, right down to how it got its name. In the late 1800s, the village was originally known as Pump. After an unfortunate postal cancellation stamp mistakenly printed the name as "Rump" in 1902, residents quickly voted to rename the town in honor of a popular local schoolteacher, Gertrude Freeman. Today, Gerton retains that independent, close-knit mountain spirit, making it an appealing retreat for anyone looking for privacy, fresh air, and easy access to the outdoors.
