Gholson, TX

Gholson is a McLennan County city at the junction of Farm Roads 933 and 1858, about 12 miles northwest of Waco. The 2020 census recorded 1,250 residents, and the city belongs to the Waco metropolitan area. Gholson Independent School District operates the local public schools, giving the community a school campus and a civic address of its own. Outside the intersection, the view is mostly farm roads, scattered homes, and open country tied to Waco by a short drive.

The area was settled in the late 1840s and was first known as Sardis. An early school opened in 1854, and a post office followed in 1858. Benjamin and Samuel Gholson were among the early settlers, and their name gradually replaced Sardis; a Gholson post office opened in 1887. For much of the 20th century the place stayed a small farming community. Residents voted to incorporate in 1975, and the city later grew with the northern edge of the Waco area. Its local shape is still straightforward: school, crossroads, farm country, and a city government built around an old settlement name.
