Gibraltar, MI

Sitting along the Detroit River where it meets Lake Erie, Gibraltar is a relaxed waterfront community about 25 miles southwest of downtown Detroit. Often called the "Venice of Michigan," the city is shaped by more than five miles of canals winding around four residential islands. With around 5,000 residents, it has a friendly, small-town feel where many homeowners keep boats docked right in their backyards and spend sunny weekends out on the water.

Outdoor recreation is a major draw here, with the protected marshes of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge to the north and Lake Erie Metropark right next door to the south. Residents enjoy easy access to marinas, fishing spots, and waterfront trails, while local kids attend the Gibraltar School District alongside students from neighboring Downriver towns. It makes for a quiet, scenic spot to settle down within easy reach of the wider metro area.
