Gibraltar, PA

Gibraltar is a census-designated place in northern Robeson Township, southern Berks County, about four miles from Reading. The 2010 census counted 680 residents. The community sits across the Schuylkill River from Exeter and is served by the Twin Valley School District, placing it on the rural-suburban edge of the Reading area. The river is more than a boundary on the map: it separates Gibraltar from Exeter, connects the community to the county’s industrial and transportation history, and marks the settlement’s position along the valley.

Before Gibraltar took its present name, the place was known as Seideltown. Eighteenth-century ironworks and forges along Robeson Township’s creeks tied the area to the iron economy that developed around southeastern Pennsylvania’s streams. Later, the Schuylkill Canal, Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, and Pennsylvania Railroad added new routes for goods and people. Today, Twin Valley’s schools connect local students to campuses outside the CDP, while Reading remains the nearby urban reference point. Gibraltar is a small community beside the river, with an industrial past and a regional school-and-road network.
