Gibson, TN

Gibson is a small town in Gibson County, in the farm country of west Tennessee. It was known as Pickettville in the 1800s before taking the county's name, and the place has kept that old naming wrinkle as part of its local story. Gibson County grew around cotton, corn, fruit, and other farm products, and early rail lines helped move those goods and gave the county's towns a stronger connection to one another. Gibson itself remains a compact community, with a population of 366 in the 2020 census and the wide agricultural landscape close on every side.

The town falls within the Gibson County Special School District, with South Gibson County High School in nearby Medina serving students from the area. That arrangement tells you something about the town's scale: local life is tied to the larger county network, even while Gibson keeps its own name, streets, homes, and municipal identity. The county's Civil War history also runs through the surrounding countryside, where the movements and clashes of the 1860s still form part of the regional memory. Gibson is a little west Tennessee town with an older alias, a farming backbone, and the county roads and schools doing much of the connecting.
