Gifford, IL

Gifford is a Champaign County village laid out in 1875 by Benjamin Gifford and Harvey Bullock, with the Illinois Central Railroad and the Rantoul shortline shaping its first commercial map. The village grew in open prairie country, giving nearby farmers a rail station and a closer market for grain. German immigrants settled in Gifford and the surrounding area, and that heritage remains part of the community's historical memory. The old railroad grid still marks the village's streets and its place in northeastern Champaign County.

Gifford Grade School and the Rantoul Township High School District serve local students. The village has also rebuilt after hard disruptions: the 1894 fire destroyed the business district and grain elevator, and an EF3 tornado crossed the center in 2013. Those events sit beside the ordinary work of a farm village, where school, roads, local government, and nearby fields make the daily map. Gifford is an Illinois railroad settlement with German roots, a school connection, and a history of putting its center back together after the prairie weather turns severe.
