Gilbert Creek, WV

Gilbert Creek is a census-designated place in Mingo County, set in the Guyandotte River country of southwestern West Virginia. The community takes its name from nearby Gilbert Creek, and its geography is tied to the larger town of Gilbert at the creek’s meeting with the Guyandotte. That junction has long mattered for travel through the valley. The Gilbert Bridge on U.S. Route 52 was built during the Good Roads era of the 1920s, opening access between both banks and helping the town and surrounding settlements expand.

Today, the creek and the highway still provide the basic frame for local life. Gilbert Elementary/Middle School, part of the Mingo County school system, serves children in the area, while Route 52 connects the valley with other communities in the county. Homes follow the stream and the road into a landscape of steep hillsides, wooded slopes, and narrow bottomland. This is a place where a name, a bridge, and a creek tell the story together: the waterway supplied the community’s name, the crossing changed how people reached it, and the school remains one of the everyday institutions that keeps the valley connected.
