About Gilbertville

Gilbertville sits on the Cedar River in Black Hawk County, with a town story that starts in 1854 and a survey dated July 2, 1856. John Chamboux, John Felton, and surveyor John W. Holmes laid out a place they imagined at city scale; early businesses included stores, a blacksmith, wagon shop, and steam sawmill. Floodwater on the Cedar River nearly swallowed that mill in 1858, and Peter Felton moved it toward the public square. Later Luxembourg immigrants gave Gilbertville its "Frenchtown" nickname, leaving a European layer in the families and businesses associated with the town.

Today Gilbertville is part of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metropolitan area, while the city still runs its own compact set of services. City Hall, water and sewer, public works, police, fire, parks, recreation, library services, and the post office all appear on the municipal map. Waterloo Community School District supplies the public-school connection. Gilbertville's local clue is the Cedar River: it shaped the mill, the town's early growth, and the practical layout that connects a small city to the larger Cedar Valley.
