Gilroy, CA

Gilroy is best known as the Garlic Capital of the World, and you can often catch the savory aroma drifting on the breeze as you drive into town. Tucked into the southern tip of Santa Clara Valley between the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Diablo Range, the city sits right where Highway 101 meets Highway 152. While commercial farming took off here in the early twentieth century, garlic quickly became the cornerstone of local identity. The famous Gilroy Garlic Festival celebrates that heritage every summer with cooking competitions, live music, and plenty of garlic-loaded dishes in Gourmet Alley, raising funds that go right back into local community programs.

At the heart of the city is historic Monterey Street, a walkable downtown strip lined with brick storefronts, mom-and-pop restaurants, and local taprooms. As you move away from the center, the landscape opens up into residential neighborhoods, retail centers, and active farmland. For shopping and everyday errands, Gilroy Premium Outlets serves as a major draw for both residents and travelers heading through the valley. Local higher education and job training center around the nearby Gavilan College campus. Getting around requires some planning if you commute north into Silicon Valley. Caltrain runs weekday commuter trains from the downtown transit center to San Jose and San Francisco, while Highway 101 carries the bulk of daily vehicle traffic. Route 152 also makes Gilroy a busy gateway for travel east over Pacheco Pass toward the Central Valley and south toward the Central Coast.

Downtown stays lively throughout the year with Third Friday art walks, summer concerts, the Garlic City Car Show, and cultural celebrations.
