Gisela, AZ

Set along Tonto Creek, Gisela is a quiet rural community roughly twenty minutes south of Payson. Home to around 500 residents, it sits about five miles east of Highway 87, giving locals plenty of space, privacy, and room to breathe in the foothills. If you are getting to know the area, the first thing to learn is the pronunciation: locals say "Guy-SEE-la." According to local history, schoolchildren chose the name in the late 1800s after their teacher read them a story titled Countess Gisela. The valley also holds an even deeper past, with centuries-old Salado ruins preserved along the creek banks.
