Gladwin, MI

Gladwin is the county-seat city on the Cedar River in central Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The 2020 census counted 3,069 residents. The county was named for Henry Gladwin, the British commander associated with Detroit during Pontiac’s War, while the settlement itself was first called Cedar until another Michigan community claimed that name. Gladwin incorporated in 1893 and grew into the county’s civic center, with county offices, schools, businesses, and roads meeting around the river valley. The city and Gladwin Township share a name but operate as separate local governments. The Cedar River is still the easiest way to understand the place.

City parks provide river access, while the downtown and county buildings handle the practical side of life; nearby waterways and dams draw people out for boating, fishing, and paddling. Gladwin also keeps a regular local schedule of fairs, markets, holiday events, and school activities through the seasons. It is a small northern Michigan county seat with a river running through the middle, enough civic work to fill a weekday, and enough water and woods around the edges to make the outdoors part of the town’s normal routine.
